SACO in South Africa is dedicated to collaborating with organizations that make a meaningful impact within our local communities. Our commitment extends beyond financial contributions and donations; we also offer business support and guidance to ensure lasting benefits.
Our primary focus is on the education sector, where we assist schools in need through various initiatives. These include constructing classrooms, sports fields, and providing school uniforms and sports kits. Additionally, we establish sustainable fruit and vegetable gardens at schools and partner with environmental organisations to reduce our ecological footprint.
SACO in South Africa is deeply committed to partnering with selected beneficiaries on national environmental initiatives. These include tree planting, promoting food sustainability, and conducting clean-up campaigns to reduce waste in waterways such as rivers, dams, and oceans.
Beyond these initiatives, we actively support local businesses by imparting business knowledge, providing rental properties, and supplying essential office equipment.
Turning Play into a Resource – and Having Fun!
Access to clean water and education were two significant challenges in Africa. As an integral part of the African community, SACO in South Africa devised interconnected strategies to address these issues. In 2011, the Play Pump system was introduced at a rural school in KwaZulu Natal. This innovative solution harnessed the energy generated by children playing on a merry-go-round to pump clean, potable water. Due to its success, SACO in South Africa annually sponsored Play Pumps at numerous rural schools across the country.
The Play Pump resembled a colorful merry-go-round found in children’s playgrounds. As children played, their movement powered the pump, which stored water in a tank, providing the school and surrounding community with a reliable source of clean water. This initiative had multiple benefits, including supporting community vegetable gardens, watering livestock, and freeing young girls from the task of fetching water, enabling them to attend school.
Supported by SACO in South Africa, local businesses, and international donors, this project continued to attract attention and funding. With ongoing client support, the aim was to expand the deployment of Play Pumps in rural South African communities, enhancing quality of life through sustainable solutions.
